7/15/12 Recap

Yesterday, in Atlanta, Ben Sheets made his Braves debut against Johan Santana. There was no scoring until the bottom of the fifth. with a runner on and 2 outs, Johan had his batter in a 2-2 count and threw a pitch on the outside corner that could've gone either way, but CB Buckner called it a ball, and Santana ended up walking him. With the next batter, the count was 1-2, and Santana threw the same pitch, which was called a ball. This batter eventually hit a single. The next batter was Freddie Freeman, and he hit one into the right field seats to cap off a 6-run 5th. The Mets would eventually get on the board with an RBI single by Andres Torres, but that would be it as the Braves take this game 6-1 and sweep the Mets in this 3-game weekend series. Ben Sheets won his first Major League game since 2010.
The Yankees went for the sweep against Anaheim, but New York starter Ivan Nova gave up 2 HR's in the 1st inning to Eric Aybar and King Albert Pujols. In the next 7 1/2 innings, this game would prove to be a slugfest as the score was 9-5 going into the 9th. In the top of the ninth, Mark Trumbo provided again, hitting another Trumbomb to give LA a 10-5 lead into the bottom of the ninth. With Robby Cano on base, Mark Teixeira hit one that was next seen over the right field wall that made the score 10-7. The Yanks loaded the bases but had 2 men out as Curtis Granderson, who had already homered that day, walked to the plate, needing another to win the game. Granderson ended up walking to bring in a run to make the score 10-8. Then up came Alex Rodriguez. A-Rod had already homered that day, and he needed one more grand slam to pass Lou Gehrig for the most all-time. Rodriguez popped out to the 1st baseman Albert Pujols, and the Angels avoid a 3-game sweep and win this one 10-8.
