7/18/12 Recap

Yesterday, the Yankees were looking for the sweep of division-rival Toronto. In the bottom of the first, Nick Swisher hit an RBI single to make it 1-0 New York. The very next batter was Mark Teixeira, and he homered to deep right field, and it was quickly 3-0 Yankees. The Bombers would score 3 more runs before the game was rain-shortened after 6 1/2 innings, and the Yankees won 6-1, sweeping the Jays and continuing a strong 3-game winning streak. During this game, Robinson Cano extended his 21-game hitting streak, and he has a .402 average during his streak.
Before I start the Mets recap, let me point out the obvious: the bullpen blew it again, and the Mets would've won it if it wasn't for the 'pen. There was no scoring until the bottom of the sixth, when Adam Laroche homered off of Mets starter, Chris Young, and it was 1-0 Nats. Bullpen pitcher, Miguel Batista, came in in the bottom of the 7th with the score 2-1 Washington, and he gave up a 2-run double to make it 4-1. In the top of the ninth, David Wright hit a 2-out solo shot. Wright's 12th home run of the year, and it was 4-2. The next batter was Jason Bay, and he homered off the foul pole, and just like that, it was 4-3. Then came up Jordany Valdespin, who homered in the 9th the night before, and he ended up striking out against Tyler Clippard to give the Nationals the win 4-3. The loss for the Mets, of course, went to Miguel Batista, the lone pitcher from the bullpen for New York lat night.
